After Sunil Chhetri retirement, Lallianzuala Chhangte 'doesn't mind' being new No.9

India winger Lallianzuala Chhangte doesn’t mind becoming the new No.9 for the national team to replace the retiring Sunil Chhetri. The Indian captain will be ending his career on June 6, when India will play the World Cup qualifier against Kuwait at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. Chhetri has been a pivotal figure in the Indian national team setup for close to 19 years and it will be a big task to replace him.

Chhangte has now raised his hand up to replace Chhetri if the team needs him to play the role. Speaking to the reporters, as quoted by PTI, Chhangte said he is ready to play through the middle, and he has the height and attributes to play as a proper No.9.

“Of course, I won’t mind if the team wishes for me to play in the center.”

“My height and attributes are suited for a proper number 9. Ultimately, it’s God’s decision, but I would not mind if the country needs me in that role,” said Chhangte.

Everyone is sad

Chhetri announced his retirement on May 16, and Chhangte said that everyone in the team is sad with the news. The winger said that everyone will miss him inside the dressing room and someone will have to take the responsibility to replace him.

“Everyone is sad. But looking at all his achievements, we are happy for him as well. We will miss him a lot in the dressing room and what he has done for the country. I hope someone will take responsibility,” said Chhangte.

Chhangte also recalled the first time he played for India and Chhetri told him to enjoy the game and be yourself. The winger said it was a privilege to play alongside the legendary striker and want to cherish the training sessions with him.

“It was very, very interesting. The first time I played for India, he called me and told me to be myself to enjoy the game. It’s a privilege to play alonside him. I want to cherish every single training session with him,” said Chhangte.

India are currently second in Group A but are level on points with Afghanistan and one ahead of Kuwait.
